Hospitality, et al

“Always do right.  This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”

This quote from Mark Twain has hung inside the restaurant since we opened and has always guided our approach to hospitality and our decision making.

Rhubarb has always strived to be a place where hospitality professionals can make a career by providing opportunities for our team to hone their skills, work with the best products and producers Appalachia has to offer, and have access to benefits that are standard in other industries but often lacking in food service. We have consistently paid our team above market average wages and introduced important benefits like health insurance, a retirement plan, Employee Assistance Network for mental health, and PTO for all staff as we were able.  A year and half ago, we made the further decision to commit to enrolling  in the Just Economics Certified Living Wage program.

As the landscape of hospitality has changed rapidly and drastically over the last few years, we must change with it, all while continuing to take care of our team, as has been our priority since Rhubarb opened ten years ago. Though we struggled with this decision (and resisted for a long time), our 4% hospitality surcharge helps us sustainably and positively impact our team so you, our loyal guests, can continue to receive top notch hospitality from service and culinary professionals.
